On 16 October, 2012 Commissioner P.Oyunchimeg had a meeting with Mr. Wojciech B.Trojan, senior regional Protection Officer, United Nations Refugee Agency, and discussed refugee rights issues.
During the meeting both parties pointed out that though Mongolia is not a party to the UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees(1951) and Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees(1967), Mongolia addresses any issues related to refugees who crossed the national border from the human rights perspectives in accordance with humanitarian law, and NHRCM could cooperate with UN Refugee Agency on the following issues. For instance, NHRCM needs to conduct educational activities demonstrating refugees rights need to be addressed in the scope of international humanitarian law.
In addition, NHRCM may conduct major training sessions for employees of National Emergency Management Agency and law enforcement agencies on how to ensure human rights, especially the rights of refugees, during natural disasters and public emergency situations.
Moreover, during the meeting both sides considered searching for possibilities to appoint combined working group including representatives from Emergency management service, Police, and NHRCM in Aphganistan, Sierra-Leone, and Sudan that is to examine the situation of peacekeepers and to get acquainted with activities of the United Nations’ and domestic bodies in charge of refugee issues in those countries.
Mr. Vojiesh Trojan says he will relay what was discussed during the meeting to the UN Refugee Agency and make it into effective actions as well as cooperate with the Commission on the aforementioned issues.
